Why I Use 3D Printing in Contemporary Jewellery Design

It started with a grant.
Last year I was offered funding towards a piece of equipment for the studio, and I thought: a 3D printer would be useful for prototyping silver designs quickly. I could test a form before committing to metal, save time and material, and move faster through the early stages of a new collection. That was the plan.
The plan worked. It is a brilliant prototyping tool but somewhere along the way I also fell completely in love with the process itself, and I started producing finished jewellery with the 3D printer too. What began as a practical decision turned into a whole new strand of design work I didn’t see coming but I’m so glad it did.

Design first, materials second
Before I go any further, I want to say something about how Roxwoods works, because it shapes everything that follows.
The heart of Roxwoods is design. I’m not led by a specific material or a particular technique. The materials I use are all in service to the design. The question is always: what is the best way to realise this idea? Sometimes that answer is silver. Sometimes it is 3D printing. Sometimes it’s another material altogether.
My design process starts with the question *what if?* and I follow it wherever it leads. I draw, research, experiment with forms in paper and metal and on screen, and I keep going until I arrive at what feels like the answer. Or at least the beginnings of an answer because as any maker will tell you, nothing is ever finished, everything you make is the beginning of the next thing. The 3D printer is part of that process now and what I have discovered is that it doesn’t just make my prototyping faster, it also makes certain ideas possible that were not possible before.

What 3D printing actually makes possible
This is where I want to stop and be direct, because I think there is a misconception worth addressing.
When people hear 3D printed jewellery they often picture something that looks printed. Rough edges and visible layers rather than a finished piece. That is not what this is. The pieces in the Roxwoods biodegradable PLA jewellery collection are resolved, considered, and beautifully finished jewellery. They exist because 3D printing with PLA filament makes possible a collection of jewellery that no other process can give me in quite the same way.
Colour as a design material

As anyone who knows me will tell you, I love colour. My home is full of it, my wardrobe is full of it, and I have always wanted my jewellery to reflect that but in a way that is elegant and sophisticated (not always easy to achieve when working with colour). The challenge with silver is that adding colour can be technically demanding and often limiting. With PLA filament, colour is integral to the material itself. It runs all the way through rather than being applied as a surface treatment, which means it behaves differently.
The current collection spans over 20 colours, from saturated brights to pastels to earthy autumn tones, and black and white. Each design can be made in multiple colours and for a designer who thinks about colour as carefully as I think about form, this is not a convenience, it is a creative tool in its own right.
Forms that could not be made any other way
As anyone who knows me will tell you, I love colour. Design iteration without wasting material
When I am working through the early stages of a new design, I can resolve it digitally and print a test version before I cut a single piece of silver. I can hold it, check the scale, see how the proportions work, adjust something, print another version. The whole iteration process happens without using precious materials I then have to discard.
This matters practically and it matters in terms of waste. Fewer failed experiments in silver means less scrap, less lost time and less cost. It is a more considered way to work.
Lightweight enough to wear all day

PLA is exceptionally lightweight, which is important when designing statement pieces. The large and oversized earrings in the range are the best example. People assume something that size will be heavy but I can’t wear heavy earrings so I make sure ever pair I make, regardless of material, are lightweight and comfortable to wear. A pair of oversized statement earrings from the 3D printed collection weighs a fraction of what a metal equivalent would. Customers who try them on are consistently surprised. That surprise is one of my favourite things about showing the range in person.
Made to order, with almost no waste
Because each piece is produced from a digital file, I can print to order rather than carrying large amounts of inventory. This means I can reproduce pieces as and when they are needed, keep waste minimal, and easily adapt when someone requests a custom piece or a different colourway.
Changing scale, adjusting a proportion, combining elements from different designs: the screen is where the experimentation happens.
More accessible pricing alongside the silver work
Working in silver means working with material costs, labour time, and pricing that reflects both. The 3D printed range lets me offer design-led, contemporary jewellery at a more accessible price point, without compromising the design. The thinking behind a pair of 3D printed earrings is the same as the thinking behind a silver cuff it’s just the process and material are different. The design rigour is not.
Custom pieces and design flexibility
Because I am working from digital files, making a custom piece or adapting an existing design is a much more straightforward process than when I am hand fabricating pieces of jewellery. Changing scale, adjusting a proportion, combining elements from different designs, or designing something entirely new happens on the screen which means the possibilities are considerably wider.
Where this is heading: CAD and silver
One of the things I am most excited about is where 3D printing and silver work will meet more directly. I am working towards designing pieces in CAD and using the 3D printer to test them before producing them in silver. The printer becomes part of the design pipeline for the silver work rather than just a separate process running alongside it. It’s a natural next step for a design process built around iteration, testing, and the question: does this actually work when you wear it?
The material: what PLA is and why it matters

PLA stands for polylactic acid. It is a biodegradable polymer derived from renewable plant-based sources, most commonly corn starch or sugarcane. Unlike petroleum-based plastics, PLA is compostable under the right conditions and has a significantly lower environmental footprint in production.
This is important to me as a maker who thinks carefully about materials. I didn’t want to introduce a plastic-derived process into my practice without being clear about what the material is and why I chose it. PLA is not a perfect solution, no material is, but the fact that it comes from renewable natural materials rather than fossil sources is a real distinction from conventional plastics.
It also has physical properties that suit jewellery well. It is exceptionally lightweight, which is important for statement pieces. The large and oversized earrings in the range are a good example: people assume something that size will be heavy but they are incredible lightweight and weigh a fraction of what a metal equivalent would. Customers who try them on are consistently surprised. All earrings in the range are fitted with a choice of sterling silver or surgical steel posts, which also makes them suitable for people with metal sensitivities.
The design language: Kandinsky and curved geometry

Something I get asked a lot is: what is the inspiration behind this piece? When people ask me I tell them about Wassily Kandinsky, particularly his Bauhaus period from the early 1920s and the Circles compositions, the colour studies, the theoretical writing.
Kandinsky was fascinated by what geometric forms could do when treated as more than shapes. A circle, for him was not just a circle, it had weight, energy, and directional pull. It could be restful or tense, warm or cold, depending on its size, its colour, or its relationship to the forms around it. He spent years working out what that meant in paint.
What I loved about these paintings was the vocabulary, the circle, the oval, the arc, the wavy line, and how these forms could be combined to create rhythm, tension and visual energy and all without sharp angles or hard edges. These ideas fit perfectly into my own design language of curves and geometry and repeating shapes.
In the Roxwoods 3D printed collection, there are no right angles and no sharp points. Every form is drawn from that same curved geometric vocabulary: circles, ovals, arcs, wavy lines and combinations of all four. Some pieces use a single resolved form, refined until nothing more can be taken away while others use repetition or layered forms, overlapping or nesting within each other to create depth.
The effect is graphic and confident without being cold. This is one of the things I find most interesting about Kandinsky's influence: his geometry never felt mechanical. It always felt expressive with forms that have an organic quality despite their mathematical origin. When I look at the Roxwoods 3D printed pieces, I see the same thing.
What Kandinsky understood, and what I have tried to bring into this collection, is that colour and form are not separate decisions. They work together. A circle in hot pink reads differently to a circle in deep forest green, even if the form is identical. The relationship between form and colour is the design. This is why the 3D printed collection is available in over 20 colourways, and why choosing a colour is genuinely part of how each piece works.
Where this fits in the broader design world
3D printing in jewellery is not a new idea. It has been used in the industry for years, primarily as a prototyping tool and for casting models. What is newer is using 3D printing as a finished production method, where the printed object is the piece of jewellery rather than a step toward making it in another material.
This approach sits within a broader direction in contemporary jewellery practice: process transparency, where the material and method are visible and intentional. Digitally fabricated jewellery, additive manufactured jewellery, computational jewellery design, these terms reflect a growing field where technology is embraced as a design tool alongside traditional craftsmanship. Contemporary 3D printed jewellery is now a recognisable category, and the designers working in it most interestingly are the ones who bring a trained design sensibility to the process rather than treating the technology as the point.
For me, 3D printed jewellery UK-made, by a trained jewellery designer, from a biodegradable PLA material, using a design vocabulary rooted in art history, is a specific thing, not novelty. It is not a cheaper substitute for something else, rather it is design-led 3D printed jewellery that could not exist without the tool that makes it.
The 3D printed collection
The range includes earrings across four size scales, from small and precise through to oversized statement pieces, pendant necklaces on coloured silk cord, and rigid bangles. Every piece is made from PLA filament in multiple colourways. Every earring has surgical steel posts for those with sensitive ears. Everything is designed and made by me in Herefordshire.
